Why 'Modern Day Monks?'

Andrew here.
I wanted to share a little on my perspective of how and why we chose the name Modern Day Monks. Then I would also like to have the other members of our merry band of brothers to weigh in with their insight, reasoning, and doubtless wit to give you, the reader, a look into our rambling thoughts and passions.

How: This blog developed out of a impassioned discussion in a group chat on Facebook. As we were brain storming ideas and getting our initial post written we were considering "Brotherhood of Traveling Thoughts", "On Wings like Eagles", "As Iron Sharpens Iron", ect... The first one to post, Ben, was trying to copy and paste a passage of scripture from on online bible but was bringing with it the format from the other site. Parts of the passage were highlighted out after the copy and so he ended up having to type out the text of scripture. We joke around that it was like being a monk of old, but only modern day. Boom. What a great title. Modern Day Monks

We quipped around a little bit more about the title, but settled on it for several reasons in my estimation. Monks of Christian history, or even more generally monasticism, were men and women passionate about God's Word and His Creation. They sought to live out the call of the Gospels with devotion to God in a community of believers. They did this in many various ways and in the present there is a movement with the the 20th and 21st century church to realize this dream again. Even with married, soon to be married, and single guys in our group, we share ideas and our lives together in community. First at college in the same apartment housing, and now in our various places of occupation. We invite you to share in our discussions on life, and journey with us in getting to know Jesus the Messiah.

Your main man, the wild card, the drunken philosopher - Kirt.
My experience in product development has revealed a special trait of mine, the ability to come up with a catchy, descriptive, cheesy name. My first name for this blog was, wait for it...
"Harlem Globe Bloggers"
The reason behind this comes down to the reality of our situation. We are a group of men who attended college together while living in the same apartment building.
Now, we find ourselves in jobs spread out all across the globe.

Colorado Springs
Austin

Houston
Equatorial Guinea

We decided to start this blog as a place to hold our thoughts and discussions on a much grander level while pushing each other to be greater men, pushing each other to love God, pushing each other to love others, pushing each other to pursue excellence in all aspects of life.

We hope that this discussion spills over to our internet community, and we can push you too.

Walk with us.
Wax philosophical with us.
Laugh with us (and at us).
Let's walk.

Ben here,
As we begin our journey down this path of growth, I am excited to be able to share my experiences with you all.  I truly believe we were not designed to figure life out on our own and I believe there is something to be learned from everyone's story.  This particular group of guys is one that will challenge your faith, encourage you to investigate it, and pursue Christ with a passionate heart.  I am encouraged by the idea of developing a community in which people can participate while still living a modern, fast paced life.  We may not all have time to sit down for coffee on a Saturday and talk about life for 3 hours...especially seeing as our community is spread around the globe. My goal is to share my experiences and insight on subjects pertaining to the life we live here on Earth.  It is complicated and messy, but beautiful at the same time.  It is through our earthly imperfections that God will mold us and shape us into the creation we were designed to be.  I believe laughter and music are the two greatest medicines in this world.  Given this belief, you all will probably get tired of terrible jokes and song lyrics.  Thanks you all so much for being a part of our growth as Christians and I am looking forward to hearing from you all and seeing where this goes.  -BK

Then there was Josh;
What's truly fascinating about life is that one can never fully understand it. No matter how long you live and how completely you devote yourself to continued learning, you will never reach the point at which you can say you know it all. There is something beautiful about understanding our place in this huge world. It frees us up to live without fear and doubt, instead living one day after the next in joyful communion with our Lord Jesus Christ.

Join us as we walk through life together, experiencing its joys and sorrows while always striving to walk closer to God. Let's see where this beautiful, treacherous, awesome road takes us.  -Josh
